His first reportage was made in Niger in the 1970s, and he subsequently covered the wars of independence in Angola, Mozambique and the Spanish Sahara. Since then he has photographed all the cata-strophic events that have afflicted the multitudinous peoples of Africa: drought in Ethiopia, Sudan and Chad, genocide in Rwanda, and the thousands of refugees huddled together in makeshift camps or lining the roads, dying of hunger, thirst or epidemics. He has also photo-graphed those working on the lands of Africa or fishing its waters, and captured the return of those who had long been exiled. Recently Sebastião Salgado returned to Africa to capture the pride and the beauty of the continent. His subjects include the Himba people amid the dunes of Namibia and the Dinkas in southern Sudan. He has also photographed the mountain gorillas and volcanic region of the Virunga Mountains, which are shared between Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. These photos form part of a 'work in progress' called Genesis: a series of black and white photos of landscapes, fauna, flora, and human communities, together consti-tuting an investigation of nature in its original state. -- Sebastião Salgado hat seit Anbeginn seiner Laufbahn in Afrika gearbeitet. Seine erste Reportage in Niger entstand in den 1970er Jahren, damals berichtete er von den Unabhängig-keitskriegen in Angola, Mosambik und Spanisch-Sahara. Seither hat er Katastrophen fotogra-fiert, die Afrikas Bevölkerungen ereilten, die Dürre in Äthiopien, Sudan und Tschad, den Völkermord in Ruanda, Tausende von Flüchtlingen zusammengepfercht in notdürftigen Lagern, auf den Straßen verhungernd, verdurstend oder dahingerafft von Epidemien. Er foto-grafierte die Afrikaner aber auch bei Ackerbau und Fischerei und porträtierte jene, die nach langen Jahren des Exils in ihre Heimat zurückkamen. In jüngerer Zeit ist Sebastião Salgado nach Afrika zurückgekehrt, um den Stolz und die Schönheit dieses Kontinents in Bildern festzuhalten: die Dünen und das Volk der Himba in Namibia, die Dinka im Süden Sudans, die in den Bergen lebenden Gorillas und das Virunga-Gebiet mit seinen Vulkanen in Ruanda, der Demokratischen Republik Kongo und Uganda. Die Aufnahmen sind Teil des laufenden Projekts Genesis - fotografische Serien in Schwarzweiß von Landschaften, Fauna, Flora und menschlichen Gemeinschaften. Depuis, il a aussi photographié les catastro-phes qui se sont abattues sur les populations d'Afrique, la sécheresse en Ethiopie, au Soudan, au Tchad, le génocide au Rwanda, les milliers de réfugiés entassés dans des camps de fortune, sur les routes, mourant de faim, de soif ou succombant aux épidémies. Il a aussi photographié les Africains dans leurs activités agricoles, de pêche et ceux qui rentrent au pays après de longues années d'exil. Récemment, Sebastião Salgado est retourné en Afrique pour capter en images ce qui fait la fierté de ce continent et sa beauté. Les dunes et le peuple Himba en Namibie, les Dinkas dans le sud du Soudan, les gorilles des montagnes et la région volcanique des Virungas au Rwanda, en République Démocratique du Congo et en Ouganda.
