Newer red half Morocco with marbled covers (original wrapper bound in at front and back) Original edition from 1918, one of 550 numbered copies (here nr. 356), edited by Edouard Chavannes. Text in French with around 500 images. The introduction gives the story of the original publication in four parts from 1679 to 1818. Translation and commentary by Raphael Petrucci, augmented by a preface, a biographical dictionary of painters and a vocabulary of technical terms. Title with a very small old stamp "importé" and a small label "Galignani, the famous booksellers, 224, rue de Rivoli, Paris".
