8°., 377 pp., 8 tinted lithographic plates. Contemporary half-calf with richly gilded spine and marbled endpapers First British edition, published in New York with Redfield the year before. Spalding was captain of the steam-frigate Mississippi during the Perry expedition. He describes mainly Japan but gives also "sketches of Madeira, St. Helena, Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius, Ceylon, Singapore, China, and Loo-Choo". At the end there is an appendix by the lieutenant S. Bent with sailing directions for Napa, Island great Choo-Loo.
