Rather than to develop an exclusive focus on contemporary statements, a deliberate attempt was made to choose material from periods throughout history, going back to the literature of the ancient world. Not only is this material valuable for its own merit, but it also demonstrates a broad perspective in which to place our current assumptions about reality. It allows for cultural and historical comparison as well. Works from many civilizations are included in the collection: American Indian myths; Japanese legend; seventeenth century, romantic, and modern English and American stories and poems as well as Mexican legends and voodoo tales. A variety of genres is represented, including poems, short stories, myths, fairy tales, and journals. The authors include the anonymous creators of antiquity, the little-known, and the major writers of Western literature, such as Blake, Andersen, Hawthorne, Poe, Whitman, and Yeats. The works themselves are a mixture of the famous and the unfamiliar, the old and the new. Among the recent or contemporary writers, included are Barth, Barthelme, and O'Connor.
