His study - in Vienna and later in London - contained his famous couch and library and also housed some two thousand ancient sculptures from Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East and Asia. This pioneering book - published in association with the Freud Museum in London - examines what the collection may have meant to Freud and the connections he made between art, antiquities, archaeology and psychoanalysis. Freud's writings on psychoanalysis were infiltrated by references to archaeology, from uncovering 'layers' of meaning to searching for a person's or a civilization's lost past. The contributors to this volume persuasively show that these were not idle metaphors - Freud hoped to legitimize his experimental probings into the structure of the psyche by comparing his work with that of an archaeologist, and he was reminded of his and civi-lization's origins by his stimulating array of antique and mythological objects. Peter Gay, author of Freud: A Life for OurTime, and Richard Wells, Director of the Freud Museum, London, introduce Freud and his collection, while philosopher and critic Donald Kuspit, art historian Lynn Gamwell, psychoanalyst Martin Bergmann and humanities scholar Ellen Handler Spitz contribute essays on a broad range of topics relating to Freud and art. An account of Freud's library and an appendix of texts related to antiquities are provided by art historian Wendy Botting and J. Keith Davies, librarian at the Freud Museum. Ninety full colour reproductions of items in the collection and a selection of documentary illustrations complete this unusual and fascinating study.
