Contemporary vellum (spine well rebacked with parts of the old label) First edition in quarto of this early biography of Tsar Peter, Emperor of Russia (1672-1725). The author Eleazar de Mauvillon (1712-1779) worked as a French teacher in several German towns and later became professor of French at the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig. He claims to have used many memoirs and monography in German, French and Italian and extensively quotes from letters and offcial documents. The plates show a map of St. Petersburg with the course of the Neva, the Croonslot castle, a plan of the battle at the Pultowa and the battle of Pruth. The engravings mostly show coins. - Endpaper with large engraved bookplate (chelavier de Folard), some browning, little spotting, some foxing, little staining in some parts. Binding rubbed and a little soiled, spine skilfully repaired.
